Ryegrass

Quick-growing annual grass used for weed suppression, erosion control, adding organic matter, or as a nutrient catch. Establishes quickly, smothering weeds and makes a great nurse crop mixed with legumes or grasses. Its dense root system sits shallow on the soil surface, holding soil in place, improving water infiltration and soil tilth. Above the soil, ryegrass biomass can yield 4,000-8,000 lbs of dry matter per acre with a single cut. As a nutrient catch it captures nitrogen and reduces leaching over the winter. Hardy through Zone 6. Broadcast seed at 20-30 lbs/acre. If soil is tilled and moist, no need to incorporate; if dry or using for culti-packing drill 10-20 lbs/acre, 1/4-1/2 inch deep. Use 1/2 lb/1,000 sq ft.
